About statio.nz

statio.nz is a free television station that streams public domain films around the clock to viewers in New Zealand. No ads, no accounts, no algorithms — just films that belong to everyone.

Copyright in New Zealand

New Zealand has one of the shortest copyright terms in the world: 50 years for films and sound recordings, with no life-of-author calculation. Any film first published before 1976 is in the public domain here.

This is something worth celebrating — and defending. Recent trade deals (TPPA) have attempted to extend our copyright term to 70 years, a wholesale destruction of our public commons to match the Mickey Mouse-shaped hole other countries have wrecked in their own. Our trade negotiators have been willing to give away our cultural heritage in exchange for access to agricultural markets.

This station is a demonstration of the rights they are trying to destroy.
